Thoughts on Coachella 2011

If you love music the way me and my friends do, then every year you are looking forward to seeing who is playing Coachella. (We are from California, it is probably the biggest music event of the year.) Plus as the first summer festival I think most industry people are so excited to get out of the office and the cold, that they all rush into the sun! So here is the obligatory discussion about who I’m excited to see.
Bold indicates a priority and each day is listed based on the billing order.

Okay in more detail:
First of all, I can’t believe DFA is back! Ecstatic wouldn’t even describe my joy of seeing that they are reuniting and at Coachella of all places! All the acts I’ve bolded above are people I’ve wanted to see for some time now but haven’t (with the exception of Arcade Fire.) Although Coachella might not be the ideal place to see some of your favorite acts for the first time considering daytime slots are limited to ~30 minute sets, it’s still a great chance to check out a bunch of bands. I remember seeing Dr. Dog play an amazing early set at Coachella 2009 despite the limited amount of time. A great live band can still make a huge impact.
There are key people like Kanye that I’ll obviously go check out and then probably run over to see another band during the same slot, or on the Friday slot once they release the set times I might end up finding myself at Interpol but rush off to dance to the Chemical Brothers or Robyn.
No matter what the line up, festivals like this are fun because it’s really about the entire experience, not just the lineup. I must say I was surprised not to see any more “epic” acts headlining, since the last time I went in 2009 I had one night filled with Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, and Morrissey. All in all, Happy Coachella! (Shouldn’t this be a national holiday by now?)
