The Black Angels at the Angel Orensanz Foundation

On Tuesday I went with Alex to see The Black Angels in the oldest synagogue in New York. The synagogue is now the Angel Orensanz Foundation, which is an art/performance/event space. It’s one of the few synagogue’s ever built in the gothic style! The sound strangely didn’t echo too much more than intended and the space which doesn’t look that big from the outside is remarkably huge on the inside. They have the first floor designated as an open space/stage area. There is a gallery in the basement and a balcony on the 2nd floor, and a museum on the 3rd! Incredible use of an old synagogue.
Okay, enough about me gushing over this gothic masterpiece. The show was incredible. They played the entirety of their new album Phosphene Dream, which I’ve had the pleasure of listening to for a few weeks. It’s very reminiscent of The Beatles, I can’t help but hear Revolver and Sgt. Pepper in it. “Yellow Elevator #2” and “Telephone” have The Beatles written all over them, but in a “we are inspired but making our own music” kind of way. I seriously love this band, and if you’ve read my old music blog, I describe them as “man music,” but after this show, I don’t know if that is an accurate description. They are truly a dark psychedelic band that women can enjoy too! (As proven by the many ladies at the show.)
